The Food and Drug Administration expanded its warning about weight loss supplements containing a deadly toxin that can cause heart problems, neurological damage, and death. Federal health officials identified more than two dozen products falsely labeled as natural ingredients that actually contain yellow oleander, a poisonous plant that poses serious public health risks.
Toxic Substitution Endangers Consumers
The FDA determined that products marketed as tejocote root or Brazil seed contain yellow oleander instead of the ingredients listed on their labels. Yellow oleander, a poisonous plant native to Mexico and Central America, can trigger severe symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, cardiac abnormalities, and potentially fatal reactions. The agency’s investigation, which began in 2023, has now identified over two dozen contaminated products sold through major retailers, including Amazon and eBay.
The most recent product added to the FDA’s warning list is Chupa Panza, sold by Naturista Reyes through multiple business entities, including Suerte Y Salud LLC and La Tia Mana LLC. Ebay removed the listing last week after federal notification. However, the FDA noted that some retailers have refused to recall the toxic products despite clear health dangers. The agency urges anyone who has consumed these supplements to contact a healthcare provider immediately, even if consumption occurred months ago.
False Marketing of Dangerous Products
These supplements are marketed with claims of weight loss, appetite suppression, fat burning, and detoxification powers. The products claim to contain tejocote root, derived from a hawthorn tree native to mountainous regions of Mexico and Guatemala traditionally used for respiratory and digestive health. However, little to no scientific evidence supports the weight loss claims, and the actual contents pose life-threatening risks rather than health benefits.
Urgent Medical Attention Required
The FDA issued clear guidance for consumers who may have used these products. The agency recommends calling 911 or seeking emergency medical help immediately if serious side effects develop. Symptoms requiring urgent attention include severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, diarrhea, and any cardiac irregularities. Federal health officials emphasize that yellow oleander represents a toxic substance of significant concern, and exposure can result in fatal outcomes without proper medical intervention. Consumers should check their supplements against the FDA’s published list and dispose of any contaminated products immediately while monitoring for symptoms.
