Feds SWARM Border As Crossings SKYROCKET

The federal government is deploying 200 immigration agents to Laredo, Texas, after illegal border crossings in the region spiked 86% compared to last year, according to exclusive Department of Homeland Security data obtained by NewsNation.

Crossing Surge Triggers Emergency Response

The Department of Homeland Security recorded 2,600 encounters between federal agents and migrants in the Laredo Sector during March and April, representing a 50% increase from the previous two months. April 2026 alone saw 1,400 encounters, an 86% jump from April 2025. The 200 agents will deploy from their regular assignments along the northern and southern borders for 30 days to assist overwhelmed local Border Patrol employees dealing with daily illegal entry attempts from Mexico.

Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed the deployment will include members of BORTAC, a special operations unit typically reserved for complex field operations. CBP stated that the Laredo Sector faces unique challenges because the entire border consists of the Rio Grande with no natural barriers to deter illegal crossings, making it a prime target for smuggling operations. Despite the surge, CBP maintained that resource flexibility allows rapid agent redeployment to enforcement priorities.

Gotaways Present Security Concern

Border cameras capture approximately 48 migrants daily who successfully evade capture after entering the United States, known as gotaways in immigration enforcement terminology. Former Customs and Border Protection Commander Jason Owens told NewsNation that even one gotaway presents too much risk because a single bad actor could harm American communities. The concern centers on not knowing the identity, cargo, or intentions of individuals who successfully breach border security and disappear into the interior.

Border agents at Laredo South Station report increased smuggling attempts involving U.S. citizens driving migrants across the border while trying to avoid detection. One recent case involved a 13-year-old locked inside a closet compartment of a semi-truck, with a pregnant migrant hidden in the sleeper compartment and eight others concealed under mattresses and in various compartments throughout the vehicle.

Wall Expansion Faces Local Opposition

The Trump administration plans to expand the border wall through Laredo, but city officials are pushing back over concerns the construction will run through residential neighborhoods and eliminate river views for residents. Laredo Mayor Victor Trevino said border security remains important but cannot come at the expense of quality of life and commerce. The city hopes to negotiate with federal officials rather than pursue litigation, with answers expected by summer regarding the wall’s future route.
