GOOD NEWS: Armed Guard Kills Bank Attacker

A Citibank security guard prevented further casualties when he fatally shot an armed attacker who killed one employee at a Tampa-area business complex on Wednesday, demonstrating how trained security personnel can protect innocent lives during violent incidents.

Swift Response Stops Active Threat

The attack began around 12:11 p.m. when the suspect drove a sedan through a fenced perimeter and crashed into an outdoor seating area where employees were having lunch, according to Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Frank Losat. The attacker then exited his vehicle carrying a rifle and shot a female Citibank employee. The security guard engaged the suspect inside the building’s cafeteria, where the two exchanged gunfire. The guard’s accurate response ended the threat before additional employees could be harmed.

Four other individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident, though authorities have not confirmed whether the vehicle or gunfire caused those injuries. Approximately 3,200 Citibank employees were working at the Tampa campus when the attack occurred, and investigators planned to conduct witness interviews throughout the night.

Targeted Attack Under Investigation

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister initially stated that preliminary information suggested a targeted incident. Sources told ABC News the suspect may have harbored a financial grievance potentially connected to the bank, though investigators continue working to determine whether the attacker and victim knew each other. Chief Deputy Losat emphasized that early details remain subject to change as the investigation progresses through what he described as a very large crime scene.

Citibank CEO Jane Fraser confirmed in an internal message that the deceased victim worked for the company, though authorities are withholding her name pending full identification and family notification. The suspect’s identity also remains unreleased. Fraser praised the security team’s brave actions, stating they prevented an even worse outcome.

Security Preparedness Makes the Difference

The incident underscores the critical value of trained, armed security personnel at major business facilities. The guard’s decisive action protected thousands of employees from a dangerous attacker who had already demonstrated lethal intent. Citibank confirmed the Tampa campus is secure and announced plans to add additional security at other locations as necessary. The company is providing counseling and support resources to employees processing this traumatic event. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are participating in the investigation, with crime scene processing expected to continue into Thursday.
