President Trump signed a historic security agreement with Greenland and Denmark that grants the United States sweeping military authority over the Arctic island, blocking adversaries from establishing any presence without American approval.

Permanent Military Expansion Approved

The deal, signed September 22, 2026, at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, allows the United States to expand its existing Pituffik Space Base and establish two additional military installations at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, locations separated by roughly 950 miles. The agreement contains no expiration date and will remain in force even if Greenland gains independence from Denmark. Any of the three parties can propose additional defense areas subject to mutual approval.

Trump described the arrangement as giving America permanent control over security needs in Greenland. The President declared no U.S. adversary would be permitted to establish military presence or make sensitive investments without express written approval from Washington. Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen joined Trump in signing the agreement.

Blocking China and Russia

The security pact intensifies screening requirements for foreign investment from countries outside NATO and the European Union. This provision directly targets Chinese and Russian attempts to gain influence in the strategically vital Arctic region. The deal explicitly blocks non-NATO nations from establishing bases on Greenland without agreement from all parties. Nielsen stated the agreement should eliminate any doubt about where Greenland’s loyalty lies, referencing long-term security threats Trump has identified.

The arrangement updates a 1951 security agreement between the parties. Nielsen acknowledged the world has changed dramatically since that earlier pact, recognizing new threats in the Arctic region. Frederiksen emphasized the deal respects Denmark’s territorial integrity while preserving Greenland’s right to self-determination.

Strategic Arctic Control

Greenland’s location makes it critical for American defense strategy. The existing Pituffik Space Base serves as the northernmost U.S. military installation, functioning as an early-warning system for incoming missiles. The two new base locations will extend American military reach across the massive island. Trump has previously discussed acquiring Greenland outright, drawing criticism from NATO allies for suggesting force might be necessary. This agreement provides the security benefits Trump sought while maintaining Greenland’s formal sovereignty under Denmark.
