Security Team Raised Red Flags Before Shooting
According to the legal filing dated September 9, Turning Point USA organizers directly contacted UVU Police Chief Jeffrey Long about student reports of rooftop access to the Sorenson Center near Kirk’s speaking venue. The exchange, cited in court documents, shows TPUSA requested controlled access or security placement on the roof. Kirk was fatally shot September 10, 2025, by a gunman firing from the Losee Center rooftop across the campus courtyard where the 31-year-old father of two addressed students.
The filing emphasizes that rooftop threats should have been paramount given the attempted assassination of President Trump by a rooftop shooter one year earlier. Kirk maintained close personal and political ties with Trump, speaking at Republican National Conventions in 2016, 2020, and 2024. Tyler Robinson, 23, faces charges in the killing and pleaded not guilty nearly a year after the incident.
University Failures Created Preventable Tragedy
Attorney Brett Parkinson, representing Kirk’s widow Erika and their two children, stated the murder was entirely preventable had Utah and UVU honored security commitments including protecting rooftops surrounding the speaking area.
